To paraphrase the great Mark Twain: “The rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated.”
Starting at the end of February, with the publication of this article in the Yakima Herald, we’ve been fielding this question over and over, and the answer is always the same: No, we are not closing, we are not selling, we have no plans to go out of business.
In fact, the opposite is true: we are exploring options to expand Encore Books. This may involve a change of location. Possibly even a change of name or a makeover of our brand. But we have every intention to stay in business for the foreseeable future.
Yes, the owners have retired, but that’s not a new thing. They have been retired for years (before they even owned the bookstore, to be honest) and the only change is they are less involved day-to-day running the store.
We thought, when this rumor started, that it would dispel itself in a few weeks at most. We kept opening the door every day and we kept selling books, and it seemed pretty obvious to us that there are no signs of change. But now its June and people are still asking us. We’re getting ready to celebrate 15 years as central Washington’s best used bookstore in July so its time to put this rumor to bed. We’re not going anywhere.
If the worst happens at some point in the future and we do end up having to close or sell, we’ll let you know directly, via this webpage, via our Facebook page, and at Encore Books itself. It won’t be a rumor and you won’t have to guess. If you are a regular customer of ours you will be told by us when we have decided to call it quits. At the very least everyone will be invited to a giant Going-Out-of-Business Sale.
But we’re not there yet, and we’d like to say thank you all of our customers for their continued support that enables us to stay in business. It’s a great honor to serve the community doing something we love, and we hope to do it for many years to come.
